Altair Luxury Villa - Hersham - Mossel Bay
Altair Luxury Villa is a self-catering guesthouse in Hersham, which also accommodates the private living quarters of the retired owners.
The very steep site allowed for the vertical staggering of building elements to optimize 180-degrees of south facing ocean views. The building envelope is broken up into separated free-standing structures which allowed for the creation of a north facing outdoor entertainment area, well protected from the frequent south-eastern sea wind.
Modest, elemental building forms were grouped together to create an interesting environment, and also enhances the perception of human scale. Flat roofs were installed to respect neighbouring views and limit the sky-line impact, with a single limited pitched roof structure to provide balance for the envelope. The contrasting use of sincere materials like concrete, clay bricks, timber and galvanized steel elements, further refine the underplayed architectural richness.
Guest accommodation includes a spacious open plan living area with dining and kitchen amenities. The living area is provided with floor to ceiling fenestration, providing lavish sea views on the southern side, while engaging with a pool courtyard on the northern facade. Dressing room and barbecue facilities are provided adjacent the swimming pool - complete with pizza oven. The 4x en-suite bedrooms are located in a detached wing.
A sliding screen separates the private quarters from the guest accommodation and pool courtyard. This allows for the owners' full access to all the amenities when they are not catering for any guests. A covered sea facing patio is also provided for the exclusive pleasure of the owners, complete with sliding panels on the windy side. Adequate parking is provided with separate entrances leading to the guest area and private dwelling.
