House Erasmus - Centurion
House Erasmus is located in Irene Glen Estate - Centurion, on a gently sloped 8500m² site with magnificent western views over Pretoria. The dolomite soil conditions posed a serious risk, with a small pocket of relative stable ground conditions on the northern side of the site.
The main consideration for this bespoke design was the trade off between beautiful (but over-heating) western views and the preferred north orientation of the dwelling. The contemporary architecture is softened by incorporating natural timber elements into the design and the use of local stone to blend the structure with the natural surround. The architectural forms are broken up into separate wings to closely reflect the different internal activities.
The ground floor layout was specifically designed for entertainment purposes and the open plan layout spills onto a covered patio with western views. As protection against the harsh afternoon sun, the main external patio and swimming pool were positioned on the eastern side of the dwelling. A central garden feature welcomes visitors at the entrance and further connects the internal spaces with the covered patio.
The bedroom quarters are on the first floor and a 'floating' bridge separates the main bedroom wing from the other guest bedrooms. All bedrooms are north facing and provided with covered balconies.
“Architecture is basically a container of something. I hope they will enjoy not so much the teacup, but the tea.”
